Seminarios

We host seminars to explore major digital rights issues such as personal data legislation, online surveillance, access to technology and the responsibility of technology companies in protecting user rights. The conclusions of these seminars are shared with stakeholders.

  • Coordinator: Mercedes Siles Molina

Artificial intelligence is powered by algorithms, which is why we need to focus on them to defend digital rights. Misuse of algorithms can pose risks to our democracy and society, damage our health and integrity, or even our very essence as human beings. At the Hermes Foundation, we defend the aforementioned R2 T2 formula for algorithms: they must be revocable, responsible, transparent and traceable. Individuals and institutions who work with algorithms must follow an ethical code and rules of conduct. This discussion forum will work towards people-focused regulation.

Digitization in the automotive sector, especially internet-connected vehicles and smart cities, pose new legal, ethical and commercial questions for vehicle manufacturers and users. While vehicle connectivity opens the door to new services and business models based on the use of data, these must be evaluated to ensure they comply with current legislation.

A space for analysis and debate on the implications of disruptive technologies such as AI and their use in armed conflicts. The seminar focused on how these technologies can be applied to autonomous weapons systems and how to regulate them. Several proposals on incorporating ethical principles into their design and use, as well as reinforcing transparency and control through international oversight and audit mechanisms resulted from the seminar.

  • Coordinator: Isabel García Tejerina

We looked at defining strategies to strengthen the ‘S’ in ESG criteria and how digitalization can contribute to more inclusive and socially responsible sustainability, through education in digital sustainability for business and technology leaders.

  • Coordinator: Alberto Terol

The seminar focused on creating proposals around the idea that rights come with obligations. The goal was to promote and defend the public’s digital rights, highlighting the importance of assuming the associated responsibilities.
